CORPOREAL Acrylic, pen, pencil, trace paper, felt, plastic and drafting tape on paper, 8 x 10 inches
This piece represents my relationship with my body, my corporeal form. Underneath layers of paint and other media is a handwritten letter to my younger self, examining how my relationship with my body has changed through time. Once both a playground and a vessel through which I could experience the world as a playground, my body became something to be scrutinized and altered as more time passed. The purpose of the body was no longer solely utilitarian but aesthetic as well. In this piece, there are two bodily forms - one slumped over and small, and one rising like smoke. The form at the bottom of the piece represents the scrutinized body, and the shadows are made up of illegibly written insecurities. The form that is rising from that one represents the body that plays, with shadows filled with written statements of gratitude.
