DARKNESS, SWINGING AND AFOOT / THE DARK, SWEET AND SWINGING Acrylic, graphite powder, pencil, and drafting tape on paper, 12 x 16 inches

This piece was an both an opportunity to channel complex emotions and to experiment with low contrast in my art. The under layer of this piece is like a journal entry - stream of consciousness venting scrawled onto paper. I then built up layers using drafting tape and acrylic paint to fully obscure the words I had written. The two forms, the crane and the hound, were first built up using thick layers of black paint, and then further distinguished from the background with a layer of graphite powder. This piece has a beautiful sheen when viewed from different angles.

In a horizontal band at the bottom of the piece, I repeat:

“Home is a hell when left unattended. Heart is a hell when left unattended.”
